What I Miss

St. Paul's gardened yards and clean unassuming houses, sidewalks on both sides of the road. The two little coffee shops within walking distance of our apartment. Como Park, Izzy's Ice Cream, and the Good Earth Restaurant. Unique Thrift Store.

Zach's and my first apartment and the coin laundry machine, the boot warmers outside Bernie's apartment.

My roommates at the duplex. TV shows and board games and barbecues.

Even college: the prayer chapel above the student center, prayer before class, meal-time prayers at Cafe Naz. The place where I grew dangerous—darkly sad—and the place where I surfaced again, shaken but breathing deeply.

The way it all smelled though I can't describe it now. Though I can't describe any of it.
